Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a Result Oriented form of therapy that emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is considered among the “fastest” in terms of results obtained. It is based on the scientific fact that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy involves several essential features: identifying and correcting inaccurate thoughts, helping clients to engage more often in enjoyable activities, and enhancing problem-solving skills. It is a scientifically well-established and effective treatment for a wide variety of problems.
In contrast to other forms of psychotherapy, CBT is more focused on the present, more time-limited, and more problem-solving oriented. Much of what you will do in therapy is solve current problems. You will learn specific skills that you can use for the rest of your life. These skills involve identifying distorted thinking, modifying beliefs, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors.
During each therapy session, the therapist will teach you specific techniques and concepts that will help you learn a new way of reacting. You are actively involved in the process, you have a sense of control, and you will learn skills that are useful throughout your life. The educational emphasis of CBT has an additional benefit in that it leads to long term results.
